Big Bluestem is a native grass and was once a dominate feature on the North American prairie and is sometimes referred to as the “Monarch of the Prairie”. This selection forms a tall, upright clump of green foliage turning dusky purple by mid summer. By late summer, deep purple, 3-stemmed seed heads appear on red stems. When the seed heads are about to open, they form bright red-orange pollen sacs that dangle from the flowers and can be seen from a distance. Foliage turns dark smokey purple with red highlights by fall. Long-lived. Excellent for use as privacy screening. Bred by Brent Horvath and introduced by Intrinsic Perennial Gardens. USPP#24999: unlicensed propagation prohibited.
