Hostas are among the most popular of perennials for shady areas, with hundreds of varieties available. Plants form a sturdy mound of foliage, topped with lily-like blooms. This midsized selection is slow-growing and features unique, corrugated leaves that emerge blue-green with a gold centre. The leaves become dark green in summer and the centre is white, with lighter green streaks where the margin and centre overlap. Leaves are so heavily cupped they look like spoons waiting to collect rain. Lavender flowers appear in summer. Hostas go completely dormant in the fall, and the dying foliage can be removed any time before mid-spring. Easily divided in either spring or fall, but plants may be left alone for years.
