This forms a compact mound of deeply divided green leaves. Single blooms of bright magenta-red petals appear in mid spring, surrounding a yellow tuft of stamens. Though seldom offered, this is easy to grow, hardy and an interesting plant for the perennial collector. Herbaceous: stems die back to the ground in winter. Pods split open in the autumn to reveal seeds, which may be used to grow new plants. Like all peonies, mature plants may be divided in the autumn every 5 years or so, if desired.
